Let me begin by first apologizing to you. This task was going to take, at most, a couple of weeks and a whole lot less verbiage. That was my original intent... that golf was not nearly as difficult as the number of theories on how to play it successfully would have us believe. Well, the weeks turned into months and I ended up with a lot more text than I had hoped for. In my defense, like a doting father, as I tried my best to explain and convey my thoughts and beliefs, I became more and more attached to and protective of what I was saying. I tried, as best I could, to tell my story without leaving out any important details... truth be told, I could have added another ten pages to each and every section but to what end? To add to what is already way too complicated a subject? Well, despite the wordiness, I hope I have somehow gotten across to you my most important belief - that the game of golf can be played reasonably well by just possessing and using some common sense. Golf is first and foremost a GAME - and games are supposed to be fun. Yes, they may be meant to challenge us as well but if the challenge leads to frustration instead of joy, well then, maybe it is just not worth the time, money and potential self-abuse that we might be forced to endure.
If you do choose to play this great game or if you are already a seasoned golfer, I hope you have found something of some value within these pages. Whether you agree with anything or disagree with everything I've said, I would love to hear what you have to say. Lord knows, being a lifelong golfer, my skin has gotten very thick and if nothing else, I have definitely learned my lesson's in humility.
And I feel compelled to give one last piece of advice to anyone out there who may just be getting into the game or just starting out (or grizzled veterans who just CAN NOT get any better - but desperately want to). Knowing what I know now and having exposed myself to reams of golfing knowledge, I just might point you in the direction of the Graves brothers and the Graves Golf Academy (no, they do not know me and perhaps would not even approve of my endorsement - but I'll give it anyway). They teach the Moe Norman method of golf and you could sure do worse than learn to hit the ball like Moe. It is a fairly simple method with a really nice straightforward approach... heck, get yourself a 5 foot piece of 1/2 inch plastic pipe and you too, can learn to swing like Moe Norman. What I love about it is, it is inherently simple and if things do start to go awry, the checklist of requirements for success is fairly short and very concise. I don't know, maybe the Golfing Gods wouldn't approve anyway... they couldn't just sit idly by and watch as 150 guys on tour each hit 14 fairways and 18 greens in regulation every day. The last thing golf needs or wants are 72 hole tournaments that end up being pure putting contests.......
Best of luck and remember to stop and smell the roses,
